A day of exploring ruins on Bressay.

The day began with exploring a defence building at Staney Hill, Lerwick, then on to the Knab, a dramatic point of land with a Torpedo Tube Platform.

I spent the whole afternoon making a circuit of the area around Sumburgh today, which is scattered in many war-era constructions.

After a day of drawing in the studio space at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse yesterday, today included exploring the remains of a radar hut in the lighthouse grounds (part of Sumburgh Head Admiralty Experimental Station 1) and a GPO (General Post Office) radio station at Scraefield, Quarff from the 1930s/40s (but perhaps constructed in preparation of hostilities).

In the evening (still on the first day of my Shetland residency), I had the opportunity to visit nearby RAF Noss Hill, an Air Ministry Experimental Station (AMES) No 54.

A trip up the long road to the radar station at Fitful Head gave panoramic views of the surrounding area, including Sumburgh airfield and the remains of an RAF radar station to the north. Next was a visit to the site of RAF Garth’s Ness, a NATO LORAN A (Long Range Navigation) station.
