Works in colour at 'Immersion'

Today I’m sharing a few works in colour that feature in ‘Immersion’ - at the Old Haa Museum, Yell, Shetland, until 22nd September.

‘Synthesis’

2024, pencil crayon, 626x 441mm (framed)

The larger drawing here was made over several weeks this summer, drawing whilst looking up at the leaves of a tree in my garden restlessly shifting.

‘Rock Formation’ I and II

2024, pastel, 388 x 300mm

The two smaller works in pastel are responses to rocks seen on a walk through Glen Nevis, where over millennia, the river has smoothed and eroded, making strange and sculptural shapes. Almost like ‘scholar’s rocks’, unusually patterned naturally occurring rocks, which in the Chinese tradition are collected and become a focus for philosophical contemplation, the forms I saw seemed to also suggest imaginative landscapes on infinite scales.

With many thanks to Shetland Arts Development Agency, Creative Scotland and Shetland Islands Council for supporting the development of this work through the VACMA programme.
