‘Storm Damage’ drawings

2020, pencil on paper, 387 x 320mm

These drawings also began as a way of reimagining photographs about nature - and also a process of immersion/escapism, working on them day after day during lockdown. Documenting the damage caused by a storm in 1989 to a geodetic dome being built at RAF Saxa Vord, Unst, the photographs I worked from captured the chaos caused by nature’s forces. But I was also interested in the abstract energy of these archive images, where space seemed fragmented. So in my drawing, light and darks are reacting to give disorientation, and pictorial depth is in conflict with the drawn surface and is dissolving.
