‘Formations’ - an afternoon of drawing

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Formations: Walk + Workshop, in association with Gaada.

We spent the afternoon at The Bridge End Outdoor Centre, Burra, participating in indoor warm-up activities before heading outside to explore the surrounding islet throughout drawing.

We firstly tried playful group exercises that considered why we draw lines - e.g to show a journey, edges, the outline of a place or thought. In both individual and group drawings, interesting lines and marks were created that seemed to express not only visual impressions, but processes of exploration; how we form connections to our environment through pathways and journeys.

We also explored shape, and worked from natural forms using water-soluble graphite and chalk. This allowed us to create blended lines and edges, and explore processes of change in nature.

To investigate composition and viewpoint, we then either headed outside or worked in-front of the window. Both rectangular and circular viewfinders allowed us to frame fleeting moments in nature, and thoughtfully arrange these lines and shapes on the page.

It was a very enjoyable afternoon, and thank you to all the participants for lovely imaginative work, and for braving the cold! Thank also very much to Gaada for including Formations in their 2021/22 Visual Art Programme, Safeland, a series of walks, talks and workshops exploring margins of place and community.
