Exploring Organic Forms - Week 2

Saturday was our second and last session of ‘Exploring Organic Forms Through Drawing’ in association with Adult Learning Shetland. This week, moving on from line and shape, we experimented further with composition and depth.

We began with exercises all about negative shape, which can really help us when drawing. Seeing not only forms but the spaces in-between adds so much to a composition, and drawing negative space is also a great challenge for the eye!

These experiments also helped us later on in the session, when we explored depth. In the Flower Park, borders were full of all kinds of natural forms. When drawing them, we had to consider viewpoint, framing and how to organise groups and many elements - gardens are after-all miniature ecosystems, with countless forms in one place! We again used our viewfinders to zoom in on small shapes or pan out and arrange larger shapes, and further experimented with positive and negative compositions in quite abstract ways. Finally, we started to experiment with collage to think about how both light/dark and warm/cool tones can introduce more depth.

Thank you very much to everyone who came along - it was a lovely session out in the sunshine again, and fascinating to see how everyone interpreted the activities in unique and very expressive ways!
