Painting at Bressay Lighthouse

Ideas / Painting at Bressay Lighthouse with Schoolchildren

Today at Bressay lighthouse, two small groups of Shetland schoolchildren had the opportunity to visit Amanda Welch’s Conditions exhibition, and to meet the artist herself. They also had a small amount of time to draw outside, and it was a great day for it with the sun shining.

They were given only watercolours and coloured marker pens to work with in sketchbooks, and we stayed in an area close to the lighthouse, but with panoramic views out to mainland Shetland and also of the dramatic cliffs nearby. We were limited for time, but the materials we had meant we could very quickly sketch our surroundings, being very bold and bright.

What was great was having time outside, and being pushed to work quite fast, getting down on paper impressions as quickly as possible. I hope to continue this approach in some of our drawings in ‘Lines Made By Walking’.

This day at the lighthouse was also part of a programme of artwork coordinated by Shetland Arts and artist Amy Gear, which is just now leading up to an exhibition at Mareel Auditorium, Lerwick, 25th to 29th May, 10am to 8pm, with free entry.
