Figurative Art Now

‘Storm Damage II’ (in progress), summer 2020

I'm very surprised and delighted that two of my drawings were recently selected for ‘Figurative Art Now’, a new online exhibition from Mall Galleries / Federation of British Artists!

Running from 7 July to 20 September, this showcase features almost 400 works, all completed during this past year. Many reflect themes of isolation, empty spaces, or indoor settings, as well as lockdown reliance on technology.

My drawings for this exhibition, entitled ‘Storm Damage’ I and II, were based on Cold-War era found photographs, and explore twisted lines and distorted shapes. Over long periods of time, I worked with shading to create fragmented areas of tone, a chaotic and crumpled effect which seemed especially pertinent during lockdown when so much of life was thrown into uncertainty. Making these small-scale yet intense works at home proved cathartic however, a way to to explore a very real feeling of disorientation and the 'power of nature' during 2020.

The exhibition is an amazing collection of varied works, available to view at the link below. (My drawings are on page 9).

Thank you very much to the selectors, Jo Baring (Director of the Ingram Collection), Andrew Gifford (Artist), Clare O’Brien (CEO Federation of British Artists), Barbara Walker (Artist) and Jonathan Watkins (Director of the ICON Gallery). I’m very honoured to share virtual space with all the selected artists.
